With just over five months until the Okotoks Municipal Election on October 20, 2025, the Town is encouraging residents to start thinking about running for a position on Town Council.
Nominations are open, and there are a few important steps to take before residents can collect campaign contributions and be added to the ballot. The nomination process includes completing all required forms, collecting signatures from residents and paying a deposit.
The election will determine the Mayor and six Councillors who will serve as Okotoks Town Council from 2025 to 2029. Nomination papers must be filed with the Town’s Elections Office no later than 12 p.m. on September 22, 2025.
As the level of government closest to the people, municipal office offers an opportunity to help shape the future of Okotoks through setting policy, adopting bylaws, and creating strategic priorities. Residents interested in taking an active role in the democratic process can learn how to become a candidate and find supporting resources at okotoks.ca/election-candidate. Questions can be directed to the Elections Office.
Prospective candidates are encouraged to attend a municipal election webinar hosted by the Alberta Municipalities and the Rural Municipalities of Alberta. These free sessions give insight into serving on a municipal council, the time commitment, key considerations, and include a question-and-answer period. Sessions specifically geared toward municipalities the size of Okotoks will be held on June 4, June 19, and July 15. Visit the Alberta Municipalities events page for the full schedule.
