Bees and other pollinators around the globe have experienced dramatic declines due to land fragmentation, habitat loss, use of pesticides, industrialized agriculture, climate change, and the spread of pests and diseases, with serious implications for the future health of the environment. By signing the Bee City Canada resolution, the Town of Okotoks is committed to protecting pollinators and their habitats.

Our pollinators are being threatened by some human activities. The available science suggests that multiple factors acting in combination may be at play, including loss of habitat and food sources, diseases, viruses and pests, and pesticide exposure. It is also known that certain pesticides can pose an immediate, or "acute", threat to bees.
