The application explains that the waterworks system includes wells that produce groundwater under the direct influence of surface water, a water treatment plant, and a water distribution system, all located within the Town of Okotoks.
The Town’s application also explains that it is currently constructing the new EPEA approved raw water supply system that will produce a groundwater under the direct influence of surface water from a new horizontal infiltration well located near the confluence of the Bow and Highwood Rivers in the NW ¼ Sec 26-021-28-W4M. The groundwater will be pumped through a new pipeline to a raw water storage reservoir in the NW ¼ Sec 21-021-28-W4M, where a new inline booster pump station will pump the groundwater through the new pipeline to the water treatment plant.
The water treatment plant uses clarification, filtration and disinfection with chlorine and ultraviolet light to treat, as required by Alberta Environment and Park’s current requirements, a maximum of 21,700 cubic metres of potable water per day. Solids that were added to the groundwater during treatment of the water and the solids in the groundwater that are removed during treatment, and those that would be periodically removed from the raw water storage reservoir will be reused or disposed of in accordance with current requirements established by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas.
The application further explains that the Town of Okotoks will continue to monitor the water treatment process, chlorine residuals, and chemical and microbial substances in the treated water supplied to water users and provide the results of this monitoring to the department in accordance with its current requirements.
