Voting in the Election

Learn about voter eligibility, acceptable identification and when and how to vote in the next Okotoks municipal election. It is important to understand how to register to vote and what is acceptable ID, as these are new provincial requirements.

Who Can Vote?

To vote in the 2025 municipal election, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old, and
  • Be a Canadian citizen, and
  • Be a Town of Okotoks resident on Election Day, and
  • Show proper identification (as outlined below).

Register to Vote – NEW

This year, you must register to vote in the municipal election. 

  • You are encouraged to register to vote in advance of the election.
  • The voters list is based on a provincially managed list from Elections Alberta. 
  • Register by September 15 to appear on the municipal voters list.
  • Voters can also register on site on Election Day at the voting station.

This is required due to changes made to the Alberta’s Local Authorities Elections Act by the Province.

Voter Identification

Voters will be required to have a valid ID in order to vote. There are 2 different options for showing eligible I.D. at the voting station:

  • One (1) piece of government-issued identification that contains your photograph, full name, and current address; OR
  • Two (2) pieces of identification, both containing your full name, and at least one showing your current address.

Voting Dates, Times and Locations

Voting by Special Ballot - NEW

Residents who are unable to vote on one of the advanced voting dates or on Election Day can request a special ballot package that can be used to submit your vote.
