Affordable Housing

Affordable housing in Okotoks isn’t just for low-income households; it’s about making sure people of all ages, incomes and life stages can find a home that fits their needs and budget. From young adults starting out to families, seniors, and those navigating life changes, a range of housing options helps keep our community inclusive and sustainable.

Affordable Housing Strategy

Council made diverse and accessible housing a strategic priority in 2018 and established an Affordable Housing Task Force to explore local needs and provide strategic and action-oriented recommendations. Their work over a two-year period led to the Affordable Housing Strategy (approved in principle in 2020), which continues to guide the Town in expanding diverse housing options throughout the community for all Okotokians.

Housing Needs Assessment & Okotoks Housing Snapshot

The Housing Needs Assessment is a key tool that helps the Town of Okotoks, and the broader housing sector, understand both current and future housing needs in our community. It identifies gaps and opportunities in the local housing system, including households in greatest need. Information gathered supports the development of programs, policies and initiatives that respond to the evolving needs of Okotokians. An up-to-date Housing Needs Assessment is also essential for funding. Many federal and provincial grant programs now require municipalities to on in place to be eligible for funding.

Rental Housing

The Town does not own or operate housing in Okotoks. A variety of market and below market rental housing options are available in Okotoks.

Home Sharing

Home-sharing is when two or more people live together, each with their own bedroom and share common areas like the kitchen and living room. The setup can vary; some renters may have their own private space and only share the kitchen, while others may just have a bedroom and share the rest of the home.

People who choose home-sharing can be seniors, professionals, students, single parents, or anyone looking for companionship and affordable living. It offers benefits like social connection, safety, support and lower housing costs. In some cases, the renter pays full rent, while in others, they pay less in exchange for helping with household tasks.

The Town has partnered with Happipad, is a non-profit home sharing organization, to create a secure and convenient option for Okotoks homeowners with a spare room to rent to a well-matched renter. Learn more below.
