Affordable Housing

Affordable housing is often misunderstood as being solely for low-income or subsidized households. In reality, it covers a much broader spectrum. In Okotoks, affordable housing means that everyone, regardless of age, income or life stage, can find a home that suits their needs and budget. This could mean:

  • A young family seeking a modest single-family home or a townhouse in a new development
  • A retired couple downsizing into a duplex or bungalow-style unit
  • A recently divorced person who can no longer afford the home they live in
  • A senior on a fixed income living independently in an accessible apartment
  • A single parent balancing housing costs with their child’s extracurricular activities in a rental unit or co-op housing
  • A young adult just starting out in a basement suite, apartment, or shared accommodation

Housing Needs Assessment

The Housing Needs Assessment is a key tool that helps the Town of Okotoks, and the broader housing sector, understand both current and future housing needs in our community. It identifies gaps and opportunities in the local housing system, including households in greatest need.

Rental Housing

The Town does not own or operate housing in Okotoks. A variety of market and below market rental housing options are available in Okotoks.

Home Sharing

Home-sharing is when two or more people live together, each with their own bedroom and share common areas like the kitchen and living room. The setup can vary; some renters may have their own private space and only share the kitchen, while others may just have a bedroom and share the rest of the home.

People who choose home-sharing can be seniors, professionals, students, single parents, or anyone looking for companionship and affordable living. It offers benefits like social connection, safety, support and lower housing costs. In some cases, the renter pays full rent, while in others, they pay less in exchange for helping with household tasks.

The Town has partnered with Happipad, is a non-profit home sharing organization, to create a secure and convenient option for Okotoks homeowners with a spare room to rent to a well-matched renter. Learn more below.
