Fence Maintenance

Screening fences first appeared in Okotoks in subdivisions during the late 1970s and are typically constructed with either wood, stucco, concrete, brick and/or stone.  

Screening fences provide a visual shield between private residences and public spaces. They can also enhance the aesthetic appeal of a community, ensure privacy and deter undesired access to private properties.  

Although the Town does not regulate the style, colour or type of fencing, the developer of your neighbourhood may have.  Please review the restrictive covenant registered to your land title. which speaks to the property owners' responsibility for fence upkeep.

You can obtain a copy of your land title and any restrictive covenants from a Registries Agent, Land Titles Office or online at SPIN2.

Do you or your contractor require access on public lands to maintain your fence? If so, you will need a Park Access Permit. Please request a permit at least two business days in advance using the online form.

The Town will perform minor maintenance of street side fencing (e.g. graffiti removal).

Regular maintenance can extend the life of a screening fence and help retain the aesthetic appeal of a community. With a little regular upkeep, a typical fence can last up to 25 years. This upkeep can also help in retaining the aesthetic appeal of a community as fences are often the first thing seen by people driving or walking by.  Maintenance typically involves painting and replacing damaged boards.
