When do you need a permit?
- Open burning for cooking or recreational purposes contained within a non-combustible receptacle is allowed, and does not require a permit.
For large fires such as bonfires, thawing fires, or fires required for other reasons on your rural property, a burn permit must be obtained from Okotoks Fire & Rescue. These fires must still use clean and dry burning materials. Please review the below map of Annexed Areas of Okotoks to determine if your Burn Permit needs to be submitted through the Town of Okotoks or Foothills County.
Fireworks
As per the Fire Services Bylaw 10-17, fireworks are banned within the Town of Okotoks. Special event permits are only issued to those with a valid Fireworks Operators Certificate. Possession, sale, or storage of Fireworks or Firecrackers is prohibited. For those with a valid Fireworks Operators Certificate, a fireworks permit is required for the Sale, Possession, Handling, and Discharge of fireworks in Okotoks and Foothills County. Please call or visit Okotoks Fire & Rescue to obtain your fireworks permit. For permit questions including questions about fireworks permits, please contact Okotoks Fire & Rescue at 403-938-4066. Okotoks Fire & Rescue wants to remind you that the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend an exhibition fireworks show handled by professionals. There are often events hosted within the Town that are overseen by a trained, certified professional.
Permit to Burn
Please obtain a Permit to Burn for For large fires such as bonfires, thawing fires, or fires required for other reasons on your rural property. Please note, the burning of prohibited debris is against the law. Prohibited debris includes but is not limited to this list:
- Tires
- Plastics
- Household Garbage
- Paint and paint cans
- Used motor oil
- Furniture
- Treated Products
