Types of Requests

• Personal information

  Personal information refers to details about an identifiable individual.

  • You may request only your own personal information or the personal information of an individual you are legally entitled to represent.
  • No initial fee applies for accessing your own personal information.
• General information

  General information refers to records other than your own personal information.

  • Many types of general information are routinely disclosed and may not require a formal Access to Information (ATI) request.
  • If the information is not routinely disclosed, you must submit a formal ATI request, and additional fees apply.
• Formal request for general information

  If the information you seek is not routinely disclosed and is not your own personal information, you must:

  • Submit an Access to Information Request.
  • Pay the applicable fees.
• Continuing request

  You may indicate in a general information request that, if granted, the request continues to have effect for a specified period of up to two years.

Making a request

• Identification and authority requirements

  1. Personal information requests
     Your request must include government-issued photo identification that verifies you as the applicant (e.g. Driver’s Licence or Provincial ID card).
      
  2. Requests on behalf of another individual
     If you are requesting personal information for someone you are legally entitled to represent (e.g. a minor, an adult dependent, or a deceased person), you must provide:
     1. A written declaration confirming your legal authority to access the information.
     2. Supporting documentation (e.g. birth certificate, certificate of adoption, court order, guardianship/trustee order, grant of probate or administration).
