Specialized contractors have been hired to flush all of the sanitary sewer mains in Town on a rotating basis to make sure that they remain clear of obstructions and that they are operating properly. This is proactive maintenance designed to help prevent blockages and backups, remove debris such as tree roots, grease, grit and sand. It also provides us the opportunity to inspect the sewer system components to determine their condition and potential repairs or replacements as necessary. Sanitary sewer line flushing is a standard practice used across many municipal wastewater systems.
The contractor will be flushing the mains around town throughout the spring and summer months with work starting on April 21, 2025.
Potential Impacts
While no major disruptions are expected, residents may notice bubbling in toilets or a temporary sewer odor if water traps are emptied.
Additionally, as part of the inspection process, acoustic equipment is used to emit repeating tones throughout the sewer line which could be heard inside a home or business. This is no cause for concern but may be noticed by residents when the sewer main flush is in progress.
Simple Precautions
While work is happening in your neighbourhood, residents are advised to keep all toilet lids closed as a precaution, especially if you do not have a backflow preventer installed on your sewer line. If you notice an unpleasant smell in your house, it is likely because the p-trap plumbing has been drained. A simple remedy to eliminate the smell is to pour some water down sink drains and floor drains to refill the trap. Simply flushing the toilet will often be sufficient to refill a p-trap.
Signs will be placed in affected neighbourhoods to notify residents when flushing is happening nearby.
