Council approved the 2026 Tax Rates at the May 11 Council Meeting. Most of this year’s increase comes from the provincial education tax, which increased by 18.6%. The Town approved a 4.0% municipal property tax increase.
This year, more than 64% of the increase on property tax bills is due to the provincial education tax, which the Town collects but sends directly to the province to fund schools.
For an average Okotoks home assessed at $729,500, the estimated increases for 2026 are:
| Municipal Property Tax | ~$101/year increase |
| Provincial Education Tax (collected on behalf of the province) | ~$289/year increase |
| Westwinds Communities (seniors and supportive living) | ~$2/year increase |
A typical single-family home will pay about $9 more each month for the Town’s portion of the tax bill. About half ($4.50) will support community safety, and the other half will go into reserves for future roads, buildings and infrastructure projects.
For the provincial education part of the bill, that same homeowner will pay more than $24 extra each month.
“Council knows this year’s provincial education tax increase is placing added pressure on households,” said Mayor Thorn. “It’s important residents can clearly see the difference between municipal taxes, which support local services and infrastructure, and the provincial education requisition collected on the Province’s behalf. Council worked to keep the Town’s portion of the increase as low as possible while continuing to support community priorities.”
“Council is responsible for the Town’s part of your property tax bill, and they kept that increase as low as possible while protecting the services people rely on,” said CAO Elaine Vincent. “During the budget process, Council tried to keep costs affordable while still funding the services residents said matter most. This includes supporting community safety and saving money for important roads, buildings, and other town projects now and in the future.”
