Okotoks recognized for battery recycling with sustainability award

The Town of Okotoks has been named a 2025 recipient of Call2Recycle Canada’s Leaders in Sustainability Awards!

The awards recognize organizations across the country that show environmental leadership by supporting the safe collection and recycling of end-of-life batteries and contributing to Canada’s circular economy. The Town is being recognized alongside other high-impact organizations, including retailers, waste and recycling operators, and businesses who are advancing waste diversion efforts.

“Our team has worked hard on our battery program, to make it both effective for residents and environmentally responsible,” said Jason London, Waste Solutions Manager. “It’s something we’re really proud of—every battery we collect is one less item going to the landfill, and it’s an easy way for residents to help protect and keep our ecosystem healthy.”

The Town’s Eco Centre runs an extensive battery-collection program, accepting AAs, AAAs, 9 volts, and nearly everything in between, including car and watch batteries, rechargeable batteries and more. In 2025, the Town collected 4,921 kg of batteries from residents. Recycling batteries helps keep toxic materials out of the environment and allows valuable metals to be recovered. The program also helps residents dispose of batteries safely. Putting batteries in blue or black carts creates a risk of fires in collection trucks, at recycling facilities or at the landfill. Residents can drop off batteries at the Okotoks Eco Centre or use the search tool on the Waste app to find the right disposal method for hundreds of items, including batteries at Okotoks.ca/waste

Starting this fall, a new annual curbside battery collection program will make it even easier to recycle batteries by meeting residents where they already are—at home. More details will be shared in the coming months. To learn more about the battery recycling journey, visit https://recycleyourbatteries.ca/the-battery-recycling-journey.
