The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Assistant Curator (Gallery) to join the Culture & Heritage team within the Community Identity Business Centre, Planning & Identity Sub-Division and Community Growth & Identity Division.  Reporting to the Culture & Heritage Team Leader, the Assistant Curator (Gallery) will be responsible for work such as: 

  •  Serve as the first point of contact for gallery inquiries, memberships, and gift shop transactions.
  •  Manage daily operations, including admissions, sales, cash-outs, and weekly deposits.
  •  Oversee gift shop and membership program, including inventory, merchandising, and member communications.
  •  Maintain accurate records and financial tracking using Town systems and software.
  •  Assist with marketing and public engagement, promoting exhibitions and programs.
  •  Plan and organize exhibitions, including agreements with artists and installation logistics.
  •  Support events and openings, arranging food, permits, and rentals.
  •  Mentor casual staff, students, and volunteers, ensuring smooth operations and compliance with safety standards.

What you Bring

A combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to qualify.  A typical way to qualify is equivalency to completion of a University (Bacehlor) Program in a related field, such as Fine Arts, Art History, or Museum Studies, as well as: 

  • 3 or more years related work experience representing continuous learning and career progression.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and multitasking abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with staff, public, partners and volunteers.
  • Ability to interact with the public professionally and courteously.
  • Capable of managing independent work and larger projects
  • Knowledge of local history, culture and art including that of the local indigenous community is considered an asset. 
  • Flexibility to work a non-standard work week, including weekends and occasional evenings.
