We're honoured to recognize Marvin and Wendy Axani, a couple whose shared dedication to the Okotoks Food Bank has made a lasting impact for many years.
For Marvin, volunteering in retirement has given him purpose and routine, and a way to give back while staying connected through a weekly commitment. With a background that includes years of volunteering through Scouting, community associations, and youth sports, Marvin brought his skills and experience to the Food Bank just over two years ago. There, he’s helped develop tools to support warehouse intake and client tracking, while also taking the time to build relationships with the people who come through the doors. Though naturally introverted, Marvin finds meaning in the quiet, consistent act of showing compassion through service.
Wendy’s volunteer journey began at just 14 years old, and has continued throughout her life. Now approaching nine years at the Okotoks Food Bank, she remains driven by the importance of modelling volunteerism and kindness, especially for younger generations. Wendy is known for her warm welcomes and sense of humour, helping ensure every client is met with dignity and a smile. She even introduced small but thoughtful gestures, like treats or popsicles for children to help create positive memories during what can be difficult moments for families.
Both Marvin and Wendy carry powerful memories from volunteering. Marvin recalls going above and beyond to support a family living in tents during the fall, working alongside staff and fellow volunteers to provide extra care during a time of extreme need, and later seeing that family regain stability. Wendy remembers helping a young mother and her children who arrived at the Food Bank after leaving an abusive relationship, only to reconnect years later when the family returned to share that life was going well.
Outside of volunteering, Marvin enjoys oil painting, music, gardening, and growing tropical plants, while Wendy finds joy in gardening with her pets, sewing dresses for her granddaughters, and spending creative time in her sewing room during the winter months. Wendy also volunteered for five years with Calgary Youth Justice Alternative Measures. People may be surprised to learn that despite his steady presence, Marvin is quite introverted.
Together, Marvin and Wendy embody what it means to give back with intention, generosity, and heart.
Thank you, Marvin and Wendy, for the care, compassion, and purpose you bring to our community.
