The Town of Okotoks has officially launched its first Tourism Strategy, a roadmap that honours the town’s character while embracing a future full of possibility. More than a strategy, it’s a commitment to preserve what makes Okotoks special while inviting others to experience its charm.
“Tourism in Okotoks has always been part of our story; from day-trippers exploring our shops to families enjoying the Sheep River,” said Mayor Tanya Thorn. “What’s been missing is a way to bring those experiences together. This strategy gives us that, a shared vision and a collaborative path that supports local entrepreneurs, celebrates who we are and helps tourism continue to add value to our community.”
This strategy puts people first, balancing economic, environmental, social and cultural priorities to ensure tourism in Okotoks is inclusive, sustainable and true to the community’s spirit. It is a result of a two-phase journey shaped by the voices of Okotoks: residents, businesses and tourism leaders. It reflects not just data and planning, but the hopes, concerns and aspirations of a community that cares deeply about its future. It is built around these four strategic pillars:
- Tourism Management & Collaboration: Establishing leadership, forming a Tourism Advisory Group and aligning partners to ensure tourism decisions reflect community values.
- Destination Development: Enhancing signage, public spaces and amenities to improve experiences for both visitors and locals.
- Product & Experience Development: Expanding events and experiences that showcase Okotoks’ unique character to encourage longer stays.
- Marketing & Promotion: Promoting Okotoks as a distinctive and welcoming destination through value-based branding and storytelling.
Okotoks has long drawn visitors for its welcoming atmosphere, vibrant events and scenic setting. This first coordinated tourism strategy brings those elements together under one vision that aligns local businesses, experiences and community values to guide tourism while protecting what residents treasure most.
“This strategy ensures tourism is purposeful, well-managed and reflective of what matters to our community,” said Chris MacIsaac, Community Identity Manager for the Town of Okotoks.
An implementation plan will follow, translating vision into action. It will outline specific steps, timelines and ways to measure success, focusing on expanding visitor information, enhancing public spaces, supporting local businesses and elevating the authentic stories that make Okotoks feel like home.
