A Life of Service: Remembering Bill Wylie

Okotoks council - October, 1986

The Town of Okotoks is saddened to learn of the passing of former Mayor William “Bill” Wylie at the age of 84. Bill served on Town Council for 15 years, including 12 years as mayor from 1977 to 1989, guiding the community through a period of growth and important change.

Bill cared deeply about Okotoks and believed in investing in spaces that brought people together.  He was a driving force behind the construction of what was then known as the Tri-Plex, now the Okotoks Recreation Centre. His legacy also lives on through Wylie Athletic Park, which proudly bears his name.

“If you start something, you finish it,” he often said, a motto passed down to him by his parents.

Beyond infrastructure and planning, Bill placed great value on the people who made the community run. Alongside his wife, Mary Anne, he hosted the annual Mayor’s Ball at the Elks Hall, a well-attended event that recognized and celebrated the many volunteers who served on the Town’s boards and committees.

Those who worked alongside Bill remember him as thoughtful, steady, and deeply committed. Over his 15 years in municipal service, he missed only three council meetings, reflecting the dedication he brought to his role. He took both pride and pleasure in contributing to the well-being and growth of the town he called home.
