Council Approves Fixed-Route Transit Service to Enhance Accessibility and Meet Growing Demand

Okotoks Town Council has approved the introduction of a Fixed-Route Transit Service, marking a major milestone in the community’s efforts to expand public transportation and better meet the needs of residents. The new service, approved during the May 12 regular council meeting, will operate alongside the existing On-Demand Transit service. This hybrid model is designed to improve accessibility, reliability and convenience for transit users, while addressing increasing demand in key areas of the community.

“Shifting to a hybrid transit system is about more than routes and schedules – it’s about creating a system that is adaptable to the growing needs of our residents and enhances the quality life in Okotoks for all,” said Mayor Tanya Thorn. “This service is a direct response to what we’ve been hearing from residents to make transit more accessible, and reliable.”

The fixed-route service will focus on areas with the highest ridership demand, particularly during peak hours. These routes will provide predictable schedules and improve access to major employment hubs, civic amenities and community services—reducing wait times and eliminating the need for pre-booking.

"Consistent growth in our on-demand transit ridership has demonstrated a clear need for public transit in Okotoks," said Chris MacIsaac, the Town’s community identity manager. “The fixed-route service is designed to work in tandem with our on-demand service, improving availability and reliability for the community. This hybrid approach allows us to better meet the evolving transit needs of our residents.”

The decision follows a comprehensive feasibility study conducted in August 2023 by a third-party contractor, which analyzed ridership data, assessed service objectives and explored opportunities for greater efficiency. The findings confirmed that high trip volumes along two specific corridors could be better served by a fixed-route model. The on-demand system will continue to operate alongside, serving neighbourhoods outside the fixed route and supporting riders with mobility challenges.

The fixed-route service will be ready to serve the community by fall of 2025, using existing transit resources. This initiative also supports broader strategic priorities outlined in the Town’s Municipal Development Plan and Social Needs Assessment & Strategy, emphasizing sustainable growth, social inclusion and a diverse transportation network.

The Town is grateful to all the residents and community partners who shared their input throughout the consultation process. Your feedback played a key role in helping shape a transit service that reflects our community’s values and vision for a more accessible, connected Okotoks.
