Community invited to National Indigenous Peoples Day Pipe Ceremony

People hold hands in a circle at a Pipe Ceremony

LOCATION UPDATE

Due to rain in the forecast, the ceremony will take place indoors at the Municipal Centre,  Council Chamber.

To honour National Indigenous Peoples Day, community members are invited to gather for a Pipe Ceremony on Sunday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Due to forecasted rain, the ceremony has been moved indoors to Council Chamber at the Municipal Centre.

During this ceremony, an offering will be made to Creator through the smoking of the pipe and prayer, with a shared intention to continue being kind to one another, responsible stewards of the land, and good friends and neighbours. All are welcome to attend whether they are familiar with the tradition or experiencing it for the first time.

National Indigenous Peoples Day takes place on June 21 each year and is a chance for Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of Indigenous People. For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.
