Alberta's enhanced recycling program coming October 1, 2026

Okotoks residents will be able to recycle more materials beginning October 1, 2026, when the Town’s residential recycling program transitions to Circular Materials under Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility program.

Newly accepted materials will include glass containers, foam packaging, flexible plastic packaging, empty aerosol containers (like shaving cream), and laminated paper and plastic packaging. These materials can be placed clean, dry and loose in residents’ blue recycling carts.

Residents’ collection schedules and blue carts will remain the same. The Town will continue to manage green organics and black garbage cart collection.

"For residents, recycling will continue to work just as it does today," says Jason London, waste solutions manager for the Town of Okotoks. "There will be no changes to how residents use their blue carts except they will be able to recycle more materials, making it easier to keep valuable resources out of the landfill."

Beginning October 1, blue cart collection will be managed on behalf of Circular Materials by T&T Disposal Services and Miller Waste Systems. Residents should contact T&T Disposal Services directly about:

  • Missed recycling collection;
  • Damaged or missing blue carts
  • Replacement blue carts
  • Questions about accepted recyclable materials

The collection provider can be reached at 403-938-7930 or recycling@tandtdisposals.ca.

What Residents can Expect:

  • No change to blue, green or black cart collection schedules or service quality.
  • Recycle more materials in the blue carts and less required sorting at the Eco Centre.
  • Consistent recycling rules and accepted materials across Alberta.
  • A system funded by producers rather than rate payers.
  • More recyclable materials recovered and less waste sent to landfill.

Residents are encouraged to download the FREE Okotoks waste app from the Apple app store or Google Play store to receive collection reminders, service updates and use the search tool on the Waste app to find the right disposal method for hundreds of items, including recyclables, organics and garbage.
