Weed & Pest Management

Goats at Work: Natural Weed Control in Our Off-Leash Park

From June 1 to June 20 (weather dependent), a herd of goats will be helping manage invasive weeds in a portion of the off-leash dog park. Please keep dogs away from fenced areas, do not touch, feed or approach goats, and respect all fencing and signage. Learn more below.

The Town is committed to safe and responsible weed control practices that prioritize public safety, and herbicides are use sparingly, in targeted areas, and only when necessary, as determined by the Integrated Pest Management Plan. Town‑maintained playgrounds are never treated, and when herbicides are required, they’re applied by certified contractors who follow all provincial safety standards.

Signage is placed in an area that is being treated 24 hours prior to spraying occurs to inform residents of upcoming treatments. We welcome community input and are open to working with neighborhoods that wish to opt out of cosmetic herbicide use. As we meet our legal responsibility to manage noxious and prohibited weeds, we continue to look for safer, more sustainable ways to care for our community spaces.

Integrated Pest Management
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a decision-making model used to prevent and manage pest problems. IPM promotes the use of various management practices (cultural, biological, mechanical, chemical, legal, and genetic) to improve plant health, and to prevent and manage pest infestations. The Town's IPM plan provides strategies and goals for the management and maintenance of weeds, nuisances, pests, and animals within Okotoks. The plan aligns with federal, provincial, and municipal acts, regulations, and bylaws.
