Nature Fridays: Native Ssssssnakes

  • to
  • We're Celebrating World Snake Day! Ophidiophobia-sufferers, fear not - snakes are hugely beneficial to our environment in so many ways.

Alberta is home for 6 species of native snake, and each of them is a little bit different! They include the Prairie Rattlesnake, the Bull Snake, the Western Hog-nosed Snake, the Wandering Garter Snake, the Plains Garter Snake, and the Red-sided Garter Snake.

Snakes are an important part of a healthy ecosystem. If you spot one, just give it space—they’ll be on their way soon. The only venomous snake is the rattlesnake. If you are bitten, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Here's what we've got going on this week:

CREATEA paper chain snake that you can hang in your house!
WATCH & LEARNLearn all about the six native snakes that make Alberta home. What do you do when you find one?
EXPLOREExplore why snakes are so important, and what to do should you encounter one.

Please note: parents must stay with their children while they are in the education centre.

Hours: the Environmental Education Centre is open Monday to Friday to the public from 10 AM to 4 PM. Fridays a staff member will be on hand running activities, and will be available to chat with the public and answer questions.
