The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Lifeguard II to join the Aquatics team within the Recreation & Programs business centre and Parks & Recreation division. 
This position reports to the Aquatics Team Leader and is responsible for: 

  • While lifeguarding or instructing ensure the safety of the users at all times through education and, if necessary, perform rescues and first-aid as required; 
  • When instructing, plan each lesson, evaluate student’s progress, provide constant safety supervision and discuss progress with participants or parents as required; 
  • Ensure standard procedures are being followed; 
  • Assist in orienting new staff, handle customer inquiries/concerns and ensure that daily operational duties are covered and completed to standards; 
  • Complete daily operational duties to standards including cleaning and maintaining facility, pool, hot tub, equipment and ensure general maintenance is performed; 
  • Provide facility users with excellent customer service; 
  • Provide support to Aquatics and other areas in the Town as required and perform other duties as assigned to facilitate special events and emergency situations; 
  • Participating and promoting safety training in pool usage and operations; 
  • Ensure that all tasks are completed safely using Town safety guidelines; 
  • Ensure equipment is being operated appropriately; 
  • Ensure work carried out complies with environmental and safety legislation and guidelines; 
  • Participate in cross training duties and on-call work, to ensure that Aquatic operations have coverage on all shifts; Identify areas of improvement, concern or potential risk; 
  • Open/close the facility in the absence of Senior Lifeguards or Supervisor, with the exception of minors as they cannot work alone; 
  • Supports maintenance and mechanical needs in the Aquatics area, including basic troubleshooting and reporting equipment issues; 
  • Identifies and responds to water chemistry issues to minimize health risks and facility closures; 
  • Handles and monitors pool chemicals to maintain safe, balanced water conditions in accordance with health regulations and facility procedures. 

Candidates will be required to work evenings and weekends

What you Bring

A combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to qualify. A typical way to qualify is equivalency to completion of a high school diploma or equivalent and are 18 years of age or older. In addition to the following: 

  • National Lifesaving (NL), Swim & Lifesaving Instructor (SLSI), and Intermediate First Aid, CPR – level C is required;
  • Basic Emergency Management (BEM), Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and WHMIS are required;
  • Must obtain Aqua Fitness Instructor and at least one other certification in Instructor or Trainer from an accredited society; 
  • Pool Operations level 1 required or willing to obtain; 
  • 3 or more years of related work experience representing continuous learning;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Strong customer service skills;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; 
  • Strong attention to detail, time management and problem-solving skills;
  • A valid Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search; • Computer skills (Microsoft Office).
