Older Adult Services

This community-based, snow clearing program runs November 1 to April 30 and is open to anyone in Okotoks who needs snow clearing assistance and has no one in the household able to shovel. 

Here's How It Works
Okotoks residents in need of snow shovelling assistance can contact the Okotoks Family Resource Centre for a Snow Hero sign to display on their front yard, indicating they need a helping hand this winter. When it snows, community members are encouraged to look for Snow Hero signs in their neighbourhood and shovel for those who need the support.

Memory Kits have been created in partnership with the Okotoks Public Library and are a great opportunity for a caregiver and their loved one with dementia to have a meaningful, engaging visit! There is a variety of themed kits that offer a wide range of interactive activities.

You can borrow the Memory Kits directly from the library and you can select from many kits and exchange for kits with different topics on each visit to the library. Learn more about becoming a member of the Okotoks Public Library here!

The more support that caregivers get, the more likely those with dementia are able to remain safely in their community.

Search the independent living communities close to where you want to live, and read reviews to see what other seniors and their families have to say about their experiences.

Financial support may be available to people who are currently facing financial challenges and want to participate in Town-operated recreational programs and activities. Pending available funding, this program offers an income–based subsidy intended to make recreation more affordable for local residents.

The Activity & Resource Guide (formerly the Community Guide) is published in March, August and December each year and delivered directly to homes in Okotoks. It provides information on aquatics, arts and culture, family and community, personal development, fitness and wellness, and sports programs for all ages in Okotoks. The guide can also be picked up in many Town facilities including the Okotoks Recreation Centre, Viking Rentals Centre (formerly Centennial Arenas), the Okotoks Public Library, the Okotoks Municipal Centre and the Okotoks Art Gallery.

The Town's Community Programs team offers Living Well Maintenance programs for anyone who is looking for an active program and meets one of the following criteria:

• Needs a gentle class
• Has a condition or injury
• Has recently graduated from the Living Well with a Chronic Condition program through Alberta Health Services

These programs are supervised exercise programs done in a welcoming group environment. One of the primary goal is the promotion of self-management as it applies to your chronic condition, as well as the maintenance of a personal exercise program.
