The Town of Okotoks is inviting local youth and community members to participate in shaping the design of the new Southside Skatepark, slated for construction in spring of 2024. With the aim of creating a vibrant hub for skateboarders, scooter riders, BMX enthusiasts, and other action sports athletes, the Town launched a survey to capture feedback that will align the skatepark’s design with the needs and preferences of its future users.
"We're looking for your input to help guide the development of the skatepark’s initial concept design," said Rod March, parks manager for Town of Okotoks. "The survey is open to all interested parties who wish to contribute their vision for the park, including desired terrain style, features, amenities, and any additional considerations they believe are important.
The decision to establish a skatepark at Howard Park, located at 229 Woodhaven Drive, follows careful consideration of various factors, including space availability, recreational needs and community feedback. Howard Park was identified as the preferred location due to its suitability for accommodating the skatepark's features, while maintaining a balance of recreational amenities within the south side of town.
Council has directed administration to proceed with the planning, design, and construction of the new skateboard park, with completion expected in September 2024. This initiative aligns with the priorities outlined in the updated 2023 Recreation, Parks, and Leisure Master Plan, where the skatepark project was identified as priority #17. Additionally, the decision reflects the results of the Citizen Satisfaction Survey and is consistent with the goals outlined in the Municipal Development Plan.
