Outdoor Rink Update: Closed for the Season

child skating on Skating Trail at Lions Campground

March 17, 2026 Update: With temperatures continuing to swing and warmer spring weather on the way, all Town outdoor ice rinks are now closed for the season.

Our crews do their best to maintain the rinks each winter, but the changing temperatures this year have made it a real challenge to keep the ice in good shape. With spring arriving and more warm days ahead, it’s time to hang up the skates for the season.

The good news? There are still plenty of ways to get out and stay active in the community. Check out other recreation opportunities happening around town at okotoks.ca/outdoor-activities.

 A few key reminders:

  • Please stay off the ice and follow all posted signage and barricades to help keep our community rinks in good shape. If you notice damage to the ice, please give our parks crew a call at 403-938-8958.
  • We are always looking for volunteers to help with maintenance of the outdoor rinks. If you are interested in helping throughout the season head over to our volunteer page.
  • Storm ponds are never safe to venture out on and are not for recreational use. There is a real danger of falling through the ice—while ice may appear normal on the surface, it is melting from below due to continually moving water and runoff of road salts into the pond, which means ice is thinner and weaker. Changing weather conditions also compromise the ice, which can significantly reduce its thickness. Learn more about storm pond safety.
