Snow Heroes aims to reduce barriers to access and serve more residents in need
Okotoks residents in need of snow clearing assistance will have a new option this winter with fewer eligibility requirements. The Town’s new community-based snow clearing program, Snow Heroes, runs November 1 to April 30, and is open to anyone in Okotoks who needs help clearing snow and has no one in the household able to shovel.
Residents needing snow shovelling assistance can contact the Okotoks Family Resource Centre for a Snow Hero sign to display on their front yard, indicating they need a helping hand this winter. When it snows, community members are encouraged to look for Snow Hero signs in their neighbourhood and shovel for those who need the support.
“Our community needs heroes like you!” says Sian Anderson, community wellness team lead at Town of Okotoks. “If you notice a Snow Hero sign in your neighbourhood, be a hero and shovel their sidewalk and driveway if you’re able. A Snow Hero can be especially helpful for older adults, people with limited mobility and anyone else needing help, even on a temporary basis.”
Snow Heroes replaces the former Adopt a Sidewalk program and aims to reduce barriers to access and serve more residents who need help clearing snow this winter. The intent of the new program is to bring the whole community together by building relationships and strong social networks in our neighbourhoods, creating a kind community that helps one another.
