Environmental Master Plan

What can we do to protect and enhance our environment today, and for future generations? This question is at the heart of the Town of Okotoks’ efforts to create an Environmental Master Plan. Your ideas will help us focus the Plan on the most important actions to help protect and enhance Okotoks’ built and natural environment.

Final Environmental Master Plan (EMP)

Please find the final Environmental Master Plan below, which was approved by Council at the October 22, 2018 meeting, and developed through community consultation that began in Fall 2017.

Phases of Engagement

In alignment with the Town’s Public Participation Strategy, a robust engagement process over 12 months, between October 2017 and October 2018, helped develop and finalize the plan. It is estimated that over 1,000 residents provided input throughout the course of the engagement. Below are the results of each phase of public engagement, related to the EMP.

What we heard report 2018

Since Fall 2017, the Town has engaged residents to provide input on the Environmental Master Plan. The resulting feedback will help inform development of the Draft Master Plan.  For an overview of the public engagement for the project, please see the What We Heard Report below:

Here were the opportunities residents participated in during this final phase of engagement, completed in March 2018:

Online Interactive Tool

This new, easy-to-use interactive tool provided an engaging way to see images of possible actions, and allowed residents to rate level of support for options on 5 different topics:

  • Designing future communities
  • Renewable energy
  • Green spaces
  • Waste reduction
  • Transportation options

This allowed residents to share opinions while on the go! Stations were put up around town including high schools, the Okotoks Public Library, the Okotoks Eco Centre, the Okotoks Health and Wellness Centre, and recreation centres.

Phase 1: Stakeholder Workshops Fall 2017

The first phase of public engagement related to developing the EMP took place in Fall 2017.

November Stakeholder Workshops

Stakeholder workshops were held on November 23 & 24. A family-friendly, interactive community workshop was also hosted on November 25 where residents were asked to share their thoughts, ideas and priorities for protecting the environment.  Here is a summary of what residents have told us to date.
