Movies in the Park - Celebrating Alberta Day Weekend

  • to
  • Alberta became a province on September 1, 1905. In recognition of this anniversary and in celebration of our province’s unique spirit, culture and heritage, the Alberta Government has designated September 1 as Alberta Day.

Join us under the stars for an evening of free family-friendly movies! On Friday, August 29th, the Town of Okotoks is excited to bring you a double-feature in Ethel Tucker Park!

Kicking off the night at 6:30 will be Shanghai Noon (2000) followed by some Alberta-themed trivia! Then once the sun has started to go down we will show A League of Their Own (1992).

Don’t forget to bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and snacks!

Shanghai Noon (2000) - PG-13 | 1hr 50m: Bumbling Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) works as an Imperial guard in the Forbidden City of China. When Princess Pei Pei (Lucy Liu) is taken hostage, Wang pursues her captors to the wild frontier land of Nevada, where he meets good-natured thief and occasional cowboy Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson). Using O'Bannon's love of money, Wang convinces him to help recover the princess, and together the two form a curious partnership, the likes of which the West has never seen.

A League of Their Own (1992) - PG | 2hr 8m: As America's stock of athletic young men is depleted during World War II, a professional all-female baseball league springs up in the Midwest, funded by publicity-hungry candy maker Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall). Competitive sisters Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty) spar with each other, scout Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) and grumpy has-been coach Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) on their way to fame. Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell co-star as two of the sisters' teammates.

    Alberta Day Scavenger Hunt

All weekend, we are holding a scavenger hunt!!

Hidden throughout the community of Okotoks will be 24 small Provincial Shields, located in various areas such as parks, businesses, and similar locations. Using the clue sheet, which contains images and other hints about locations, participants can track down the Provincial Shields and take a picture of them.

Up for grabs are three $25 gift cards to a local business of the winner’s choice. The photos can be entered by submitting the photos, your name and e-mail to events@okotoks.ca. We encourage those taking part in the scavenger hunt to share their journey of finding the shields on social media with the hashtag #AlbertaDay
