Did you know that residential speeding was the 3rd highest safety concern expressed in the 2022 Okotoks Public Safety Survey? Okotoks Municipal Enforcement (OME) recognizes this as a valid safety issue and officers will be proactively dealing with speeding in residential neighborhoods.
Speed Versus Survival
Check out this diagram below that shows different speeds, stopping distances, and chances of survival for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and even other drivers. So please slow down and to keep our community safe for our vulnerable road users!
Speed Versus Field of View
Below is a diagram that demonstrates how a driver’s field of view is narrowed in direct relation to the rate of speed at which they are driving. The faster the speed, the narrower the area of visibility becomes. A vehicle travelling only 10 km over a 40 km posted speed limit increases the vehicle’s stopping distance by 18 metres, reduces the driver’s field of view by almost half, and decreases the survivability rate of vulnerable road users by 55 percent.
So please slow down and to keep our community safe for our vulnerable road users!
