Cart Placement and Care

The Town of Okotoks provides black garbage carts, green organic carts and blue recycling carts.

Cart How To's
Identify your cart

Carts are assigned to each house by a serial number.

Please make sure that your address has been written on your cart with a permanent marker. This will help both you and the Town identify your cart if it ever goes missing or needs repairs.

For moving tips, maintenance, or cart replacement needs see the Cart FAQ page.

Cart Repairs

Residents are responsible for the general upkeep of the carts; however, Town staff will assist residents if repairs are required.

For moving tips, maintenance, or cart replacement needs see the Cart FAQ page.

Cart Cleaning

You are responsible for taking care of your cart and keeping it clean.

For cleaning tips see the Cart FAQ page.

Waste Enclosures

Waste cannot be collected from enclosures. You may still store your waste in enclosures between collection days; however, all waste must be placed inside the cart and rolled out for pick-up.

Cart Instructions

How you place your carts is important. Carts are collected by mechanical arms that require space to operate, and proper placement minimizes the risk of damage to property.

Cart use tips

In order to ensure the safe and efficient collection of carts, please avoid the following:

  • Please do not overfill carts. Cart lids must be fully closed. Overfilled carts will not be collected and it will be the homeowner's responsibility to dispose of the waste. When carts are overfilled, items often fall onto the street; this creates a mess and generates complaints about unsightly neighbourhoods. In addition, open lids can attract birds and animals or wet paper can lead to rejection at the recycling facility.
  • Please do not pack or cram material into the carts too tightly. This may cause material to become stuck.
  • Please do not put unacceptable materials inside carts. Find out what materials go inside each cart using the Waste Wizard.
    • Food, yard waste and household pet waste belongs in the green cart
    • Recyclables belong in the blue cart
    • Garbage belongs in the black cart
Place Your Carts

All carts must be placed out for collection no later than 7 a.m. on your collection day. Carts placed after 7 a.m. will not be collected until your next collection day.

Park carts on flat ground at road or lane level and make sure you are not blocking traffic.

Point arrows on the lid toward the center of the road or lane.

If you have front street collection:

  • Place your carts at the curb
  • Remember to park your vehicle in your driveway
  • If there's road construction, put your waste where it is accessible
  • If cars must remain on the road, pull carts out from between parked cars

If your collection is in your back lane:

  • Place the garbage at the rear property line
  • Ensure carts are easily accessible

Please refer to the collection schedule for further information.

Cart Spacing
  • Place wheels against the front curb or at least 0.5m (1.6ft) from your back hedge or fence.
  • Leave enough space to walk between and around your carts, as well as official Town excess yellow garbage bags so there's enough room for the automated arms on the trucks to work safely.
  • All carts  must be placed at least 1m (3ft) away from objects such as vehicles and basketball nets.
Storing Carts

Pull your empty carts back onto your property for storage as soon as possible on your collection day to avoid blocking traffic. Carts must be pulled back in by 10 p.m.
