TELUS PureFibre Project

​TELUS is investing $60 million to connect more than 90 per cent of homes and businesses in Okotoks directly to its fibre optic network. Planning is currently underway, and preliminary construction has recently begun; homes and businesses are anticipated to be completed before the end of 2018.

As part of the TELUS PureFibre project, work is required on Town utility right of ways.   The work is expected to be done mostly in residential area front and side yards generally as follows. 

A typical front yard has a 3.5m shallow utility right of way that has existing gas, electricity, and communication (click on button below to see graphic).  As part of their PureFibre project, TELUS will install new conduit within the shallow utility right of way via directional drill method.  While this method causes much less disturbance than open cut, it will require that hydro-vac holes be done to ensure that existing utilities are not hit by the driller.  The location of these holes are expected to be mostly in the utility right of way along the new TELUS alignment, which is towards the back of the utility right of way (closer to the house). 

This alignment was chosen due to anticipated conflicts along the front of the right of way with existing utility boxes and water service valves which are in/near the front of the right of way.  If fiber conduit was run closer to these appurtenances, it would add another level of complexity when maintenance/repairs are required.     There are locations in town where perhaps an alternate alignment could have been chosen in the right of way, however, consistency was considered to be important as well.  There will also be tubs installed (flush with the ground) every 8-10 houses (as per TELUS’ information).  These tubs are where the residential services will come from.

TELUS has committed to keeping property disturbance at a minimum; if any major disturbances seem likely they will advise the resident before proceeding.  All areas will be restored after the work is finished (i.e. landscaping). To find out when the service is anticipated to be available in your area visit www.telus.com/okotoks.

Landscaping Information

Once TELUS has completed the fibre installation on your property, they are responsible for adequately restoring the area.  This will include hydroseeding of new grass seed on and around your property in addition to any broadcasted grass seed you may have already seen mixed into the loam. 

Hydroseed is a resilient mixture of mulch and seed; rain will help it establish and grow, but if you would like to water the area, that can aid the grass growth.
