Two Okotoks households have won a contest for signing up for waste collection day reminders through the Town’s waste app.
As grand prize winners, the Franke family (Jeremy, Jenn and Naomi), and Deb Darbyshire each received an Apple iPad.
The contest was held prior to changes in the waste collection schedule to encourage residents to sign up for reminders that would help them prepare for the transition. The changes affected approximately 55 per cent of single-family households in Okotoks.
“The Town wants to thank residents for their efforts in adjusting to the new schedule,” said Paul Lyons, Waste Services manager. “The waste app makes it much easier to remember your collection days and helped users adjust to the new pick-up schedule.”
The winners were automatically entered into a draw when they signed up to receive waste collection reminders through either the Town’s mobile waste app or online waste schedule. All residents who had previously signed up were also entered into the contest.
The Franke’s and Darbyshire were selected as the winners from over 2,500 households who had signed up for reminders since the service was launched in 2014.
As well as reminding residents of their waste collection days, the mobile app also provides a number of other services such as sending alerts when collection is delayed due to weather, allowing residents to report any waste-related problems like a missed pick-up or a damaged cart; and notifying users of changes to collection days due to holidays etc.
The app includes the Waste Wizard, where users can search and learn how to dispose of items properly like coffee pods, hazardous waste, electronics, textiles, and Styrofoam.
