Okotoks, AB: A high stream flow advisory has been issued for the Sheep River and levels are expected to increase significantly over the next 24 hours. This means the river is flowing very quickly and both the river and riverbank conditions are dangerous, so the public is urged to stay away from the low-lying pathway systems and riverbanks at this time.
A high stream flow advisory occurs when stream levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly and no major flooding is expected. Minor flooding in low lying areas is possible.
Heavy rain is in the forecast for the next 24 hours and residents are reminded to take the following precautions to protect basements from flooding:
- direct storm water away from your house
- always keep your downspout extension in place
- check that downspout extension drains a good distance away from homes in an area that will not erode
- be careful that water does not drain onto your neighbour's property
Town residents and businesses in high risk areas are advised to be cautious of the rising levels and follow the Town’s Facebook and Twitter posts or visit okotoks.ca for ongoing updates.
