Mother nature has been giving us fantastic winter weather but that means that it’s too warm for Town outdoor skating rinks and toboggan runs to be operational. It also means that storm ponds and the Sheep River continue to be (and are always) unsafe to skate and play on. The Town reminds residents that falling through the ice is a constant danger due to changing weather patterns and water levels.
Storm ponds are never safe to venture out on; it’s not worth the risk. Due to the runoff of road salts into the storm ponds, the saltwater has a lower freezing point than freshwater, which means ice will be thinner and weaker. Instead, there are some great indoor skating opportunities in Okotoks, including FREE leisure skating at Pason! Find out more at: www.okotoks.ca/recshedule
