This exhibition explores Western art produced in the foothills of Southern Alberta. The traditional, popular subject matter of Western art emerged from settler responses to place and landscape. "Refocus Foothills: Western Art of Southern Alberta's Cowboy Trail" traces developments in this visual language of the West by putting historical works in tandem with contemporary and indigenous perspectives. Looking at the work of generations of artists who have lived along the Cowboy Trail highlights the difficulty of seeing this particular place from within and without the conventions established by this genre's representations.
“Refocus Foothills” features works on loan from the Alberta Foundation of the Arts, Glenbow Museum, Stockmens Memorial Foundation and private collections.
Brian Rusted and Katherine Ylitalo guest curated this exhibit of seldom seen art representing almost a century of work.
