Back in the Eastside | Jeff Wilson

Saturday, February 18, 2017 - 10:00am to Saturday, April 1, 2017 - 5:00pm
Reception Date:
Feb 18, 2017 - 1:00pm

The paintings of Back in the Eastside were created with the intention of capturing the distinct local narratives present in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, including: the presence and resilience of disenfranchised residents, the emerging traditions of First Nations protest, the distinctive streetscape of Edwardian architecture, and the presence and role of First Responders. The Downtown Eastside is home to many of Vancouver’s poorest and most marginalized people, and their continued presence has been a focus for Vancouver policing, drug, and health policies for decades. Conversely, the resulting lack of development during the 20th century has allowed the original Edwardian urban landscape to remain intact, while the rest of downtown has undergone fifty years of redevelopment.
