Outdoor Watering Schedule

The Town of Okotoks has achieved over 46% reduction in gross per capita water consumption, one of the lowest per capita in Canada. Thank you for doing your part by following the Outdoor Water Conservation Schedule and using water wisely!

Water use in the summer is three times greater the rest of the year. Approximately 40% of the water used during the summer is used outdoors, so please be water wise outdoors. Please respect the specified watering days and hours, as water is a renewable, but not unlimited resource.

The Town of Okotoks Outdoor Water Conservation Schedule Is In Effect Annually from May 1-October 31

Outdoor watering is permitted one/two days a week.

Odd numbered addresses may water lawns:  (Addresses ending in 1,3,5,7,9)

  • Thursdays and/or Sundays

Even numbered addresses may water lawns:  (Addresses ending in 0,2,4,6,8)

  • Wednesdays and/or Saturdays

Watering may occur only during the following hours:

  • 6:00 am - 9:00 am and/or
  • 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Water Exemption Permit

You may apply for a Water Exemption Permit for the installation of sod or grass seed.  Please apply for the permit by completing the Water Exemption Permit form and submitting to Town Operations.

Please Note: You must obtain a permit number from Town Administration prior to implementing your modified watering schedule.

Non-Compliance Fines

Municipal Enforcement enforces the Watering Schedule Bylaw to ensure that residents and businesses/institutions are in compliance.  The fines for not obeying the water regulations range from $100—$2,500.

Exceptions to the Outdoor Watering Schedule

Very rarely, we have had events that have caused the Town of Okotoks to alter the Outdoor Watering Schedule.

If there are changes to the Outdoor Watering Schedule, you will find current information on the home page of okotoks.ca or via outdoor signs, the Western Wheel, the Eagle 100.9 FM and Okotoks Online.

Water Conservation & Tips

2.5 cm or 1 inch of Watering Per Week is Adequate for Established Lawns

Through wise use of water and conservation techniques, the residents of Okotoks continue to be successful in maintaining one of the lowest per capita water usages in Canada. This speaks to how well the citizens of Okotoks have embraced water conservation and have saved money by reducing non-essential use.
