Hoadley Park - Play Equipment Upgrades

The Town is pleased to inform you of playground improvements planned for Hoadley Park, 205 Sheep River Cove, in keeping with the Town of Okotoks strategic direction for providing quality community infrastructure and facilitating a healthy and safe community.

New Equipment has been ordered! Below is a picture of the equipment that will be installed at Hoadley Park beginning July 15, 2015 tentatively.

An in park information session was held on Thursday, March 19 at 7pm. Thank you so much to everyone who came out. It was a great evening and the Town is grateful for the feedback that was provided. The Town will continue to explore the opportunity of working with volunteers for the play equipment installation/assembly.

The Town purchased playground equipment that was in line with what was expressed at the information session. The safety surface gravel will be replaced as part of this project with new gravel. Rubber crumb is not supported by the Town and poured-in-place rubber is cost prohibitive.

As several comments were received related to planting trees, some of the play equipment budget will be put towards planting 3 large (2-3m) coniferous trees in the park. As this was an important component to several residents, the Town will also consider developing a planting strategy to be incorporated into next years (2016) spring plant. Comments were received regarding resurfacing the basketball court and installing an outdoor rink. However, these items are outside the scope of this project. Information Session Summary

The purpose of the information session was to discuss with the adjacent community the proposed improvements to the park/play equipment upgrades, plantings, and receive feedback on the type of equipment desired with the playground.

The information session was advertised in the Western Wheel and a door to door letter drop was delivered to residents that back on to the park.

A total of eleven attendees from the immediate residential community signed the sign in sheet, yet attendance was approximately 20, as several attendees were children. Town administration were also present. The project was discussed with all attendees and presentation materials were displayed. Feedback was provided using a ‘dotmocracy’ approach. Attendees were asked to put stickers (green = first choice; yellow = second choice; red= third choice). Green dots were also used to identify where additional landscaping/trees was requested. Attendees also provided comments in writing, the following is a summary of the feedback received.

Play equipment- preferred age range of 5-12, natural theme play equipment with natural/neutral colors. Bright colours were not supported. The concept of utilizing volunteers to install the playground was brought forward.

Landscaping- a desire for increased planting throughout the park was evident.

Site Furnishings- keep/re-surface the basketball court, remove some of the existing boulders in the park, provide additional benches. The concept of an outdoor rink was brought forward.
