Why does the Town not have automated recycling collection?

Why did the Town move to automated garbage collection?
Automated garbage collection is safer for our garbage collectors, cleaner for home owners and an overall more efficient way to collect garbage. Okotoks is one of the last in the region to adopt this modern method for garbage collection.

Why do we need garbage carts?
The new garbage carts are specially designed to be collected by mechanical arms and dumped into the garbage trucks without the need of manual lifting. The carts are an integral part of automated collection.

Why is there a limit on curbside residential garbage collection?
The Town has set limits on garbage quantities for many years. The current limit on curbside residential garbage collection is one 120 litre cart per household at a rate of $9 per month ($18 added to your bi-monthly utility bill). The limit on curbside residential garbage collection in Okotoks promotes garbage reduction and recycling. For additional garbage options and their associated rates, please click here.

What if I have more garbage than fits in the cart?
Additional garbage that does not fit into the 120 litre cart must be either placed in an official Town of Okotoks Excess Garbage bag or an additional Town garbage cart for collection. Official excess garbage bags can be purchased at the Municipal Centre, Okotoks Recreation Centre and designated retail outlets (e.g. Sobeys, Safeway) for $4 each. If you are regularly exceeding your garbage limit please click here for additional information on how to subscribe to an additional garbage cart. Additionally residents can reduce their garbage production through recycling, by utilizing the Town's drop off recycling locations, Curb It curbside recycling collection service and Cut ‘n' Call curbside yard waste collection service. For more info please click here.

Can I throw my garbage loose inside my cart?
Please do not throw your garbage loose inside your cart. All garbage should be contained in bags that are properly tied before placing them into the cart. You are not limited to using standard black garbage bags. Residents are welcome to reuse grocery or other plastic bags to contain their garbage within the cart.

What if my cart breaks or goes missing?
If your cart is damaged or missing, please call the Automated Garbage Information Line at 403-938-8054.

Where do I store my cart?
Cart storage is the responsibility of the resident and must be stored on private property. If your garbage collection is on the front street, you may wish to store your cart in the garage, on the front deck, or along the side of the house. Residents with alley collection can store the cart in the garage or against the back fence. Please ensure that your cart storage does not impede traffic or is obtrusive to your neighbours. Garbage carts must be removed from the street or alley by 10pm on your garbage collection day.

When I move, do I take my cart with me?
Automated Garbage Carts are the property of the Town of Okotoks and are assigned to residences rather than people. Please do NOT take your cart with you when you move.

I just moved and there is no cart at my house. How can I get one?
Please call the Automated Garbage Information Line at 403-938-8054 and we will deliver a cart to your household.

What if there is limited parking on my street or cul-de-sac and I am unable to provide the necessary space around my cart?
It is preferred that on garbage days, residents park their vehicles in their garages or on their driveways. Residents can place their carts at the end of their driveways if there is little room along the street. Parking perpendicular within cul-de-sacs is not recommended as this will obstruct the garbage trucks.

Why does the Town not have automated recycling collection?
To support blue cart (recycling) collection, the Town would need to build a large multi-material recycling sorting facility, which it currently does not have the capacity to accommodate or support. Multi material sorting facilities are extremely expensive to build and operate. Additionally the operating cost for Okotoks to ship and process our recyclable materials to Calgary's Recycling Sorting Facility is not financially viable. The Town will be sticking with its current recycling drop off programs and Curb It service, which have a very high diversion rate.
