Sustainable Okotoks Okotoks Sustainability Framework
Okotoks Sustainability Framework
Since the inception of our Legacy Plan in 1998, the Town of Okotoks has remained at the forefront of municipalities proactively planning for a sustainable future. Being one of the pioneers in the region with regard to sustainability planning, we have developed in a manner that is very different to other municipalities in the province. Okotoks created its sustainability plan in the form of a renewed Municipal Development Plan (MDP) over a decade ago. Within the development process of the MDP, we created a new community vision, corporate mission statement and the four foundations of sustainability from which all other plans were to follow. To now create a specific Integrated Sustainability Plan for Okotoks after decades of progress, the logical direction was to catalogue all of the Town’s existing documents that relate to the four foundations of sustainability and create a framework that rebuilds back to our cornerstone development plans. We truly created a plan from the bottom up.
Our final product was not a plan but a framework of existing plans and documents. The work had been completed, all that was required was an organizational map to pull the documents together, file them under their main foundation, inter-relate one another and indicate the progress from the original cornerstone sustainable documents. This framework is a living document, continually being updated to ensure all future plans are filed under its respective pillar. This framework acts as a core reference library for Council and administration to ensure future planning decisions are guided and informed by the vast number of plans and documents that relate to the sustainable growth of Okotoks.
